Breast Reconstruction Mastectomy

Breast reconstruction surgery after mastectomy is no more an unknown concept. In fact, terms like mastectomy and breast reconstruction almost go hand in hand for most women these days. Any woman who has been through a mastectomy (breast removal) or is about to undergo the process does not hesitate in considering the option. The fact that there are so many examples of thousands of women who have successfully undergone breast reconstruction, after mastectomy makes clear the fact why women are not less reluctant to go for a mastectomy when necessary.

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy, aims at creating breasts that appear as natural as possible.  In many cases immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy have taken place, so that the woman does not have to face any trauma.  Breast reconstruction following mastectomy not only helps in covering up a situation that may have caused a great psychological impact on the patient, it also enables the patient to ‘forget her disease’, and move on much more quickly with her life.

However, there are various factors that need to be considered for deciding the exact time when breast reconstruction can occur after mastectomy. Often the patients are in too much of a hurry and are not ready to thoroughly measure all the pos and cons. various factors, such as the patient’s health, body type, procedure and cause of mastectomy, etc are also the deciding factors.

In fact doctors say that what may be the ‘appropriate time’ for one woman to opt for   a process such as breast reconstruction after radical mastectomy, might be ‘the most inappropriate time’ for the other. For instance in case of a breast cancer mastectomy, reconstruction may take place right after the mastectomy, or a probably after a few months, depending on the doctor’s judgment of whether the disease is completely done away with after the mastectomy, and if there are any chances of the patient showing the symptoms again. In case the doctor is sure of the fact that the disease has been completely dealt with, with the mastectomy too, the patient may be finding herself going for an immediate breast reconstruction post mastectomy.

Often patients end up believing that after a successful breast mastectomy, reconstruction is not something they need to worry about. Though this is true to the extent that a lot of success of an after breast mastectomy reconstruction depends on the success of the breast mastectomy, it cannot be denied that breast reconstruction too, like all after procedures, does involve a bit of risk as well. For instance, breast implant, reconstruction after mastectomy may cause an infection, which could even lead to a temporary removal of the reconstructed breasts.

Therefore, though it cannot be denied that because of the techniques of breast reconstruction, mastectomy has become much easier for women; there is a lot that still needs to be done. It is hoped, like in case of all other types of medical procedures, constant improvement in procedures involved with breast cancer mastectomy and reconstruction, etc, would help in finally achieving the perfection.
