Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery is one of the most frequently performed surgeries. Upper lid blepharoplasty is the more common that the lower eyelid surgery. Upper lid blepharoplasty is mainly performed to remove the extra fat, skin that may form around the upper eyelids.

Upper blepharoplasty aims at giving a more youthful appearance to the eyes by removing the extra skin in the upper lid and excessive fat deposits which mostly occur in the middle as well as the inner corners of the eyelids. Therefore, upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be used to make a huge difference in the appearance of the eyes. In fact it causes the eyes to not only appear much younger but also helps in attaining that ‘fresh’, or ‘less tied’ look. The effects generally wear out with the ageing process, though there have been cases, where the effects of the surgery have lasted permanently.

Before opting for the upper and lower eyelid surgery the surgeon and hi or her patient mainly discuss about the changes that are to be made in upper lid blepharoplasty. He/she explains the type of anesthesia required, the estimated costs, and the surgical facilities. The surgeon begins his/her treatment only after thoroughly examining the patient’s medical history, skin type, etc.

The surgeon then checks the amount of skin and fat deposits in and around the eyes. The upper eye blepharoplasty is carried out on the natural folds of the skin. The excess fatty tissues and skin is removed, orbital septum and muscles are tightened and henceforth the incision is cautiously closed.

The cosmetic upper eyelid surgery technique is completed with a very high quality electrocautery that helps in controlling the bleeding. The upper and lower eyelid surgery, on an average takes 1-3 hours for completion. The time limit mainly depends upon the cosmetic upper eyelid surgery techniques that the surgeon is going to use.

Even after laser upper eyelid surgery, the patient feels a tight sensation in and around the eyes, with a minor pain that lasts for not more than two or three days. After the surgery the surgeon lubricates the bruises with certain types of ointments that reduce the dryness within the operational areas. However, the ointment may affect the vision temporarily.

After the surgery, the scar appears bright and red, but with the passage of time the scars become inconspicuous and flat. The stitches are removed within a week of the upper eyelid laser surgery. The discoloration and the swelling around the eyelids abate, and the patient starts to feel much more comfortable. The after effects of the upper eyelid surgery vary from person to person. The discoloration mainly disappears within ten days. Also, during the first week, they should avoid activities that can cause eye dryness.

There are no harsh complications in blepharoplasty, but there is always a risk of infections or anesthesia reactions. Other very rare complications of upper and lower eyelid surgery are Retro bulbar hematoma, Asymmetry, Milia, dryness, burning, gritty sensation, scar firmness, etc. These types of complications can be minimized by consulting the surgeons.
