Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty was first introduced about fifty years ago and was performed by only a number of surgeons for the next three decades. The cosmetic eyelid surgery is the procedure which removes extra tissues, fat, and muscles from and around the eyelid for improving the appearance of the eyes and as well as for restoring the youthful look. The eyelid surgery can be performed upon both the lower and the upper lids. It is found that about 100,000 eyelid eye surgeries are performed each year in the United States and this surgery is usually much more common among females than males.

An eyelid plastic surgery is performed by a surgeon who is specialized in reconstructive and plastic surgery of the eyes; by ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) surgeons; or by plastic surgeons. Now-a-days, dermatologists, oral-maxilofacial surgeons, and general ophthalmologists are also performing this type of surgeries.

Most of the patients are curious about the double eyelid surgery, as this eyelid surgery is for crease eyes. This surgery is mainly popular because of the fact that this has no blepharoplasty incision. The laser eyelid surgery is mainly performed to remove the extra fat or skins from the eyelids and is similar to the eyelid flap reduction surgery.

The laser Blepharoplasty has very few side effects on the patient; hence one can easily return to his/her normal life within a week or few days. Mini eyelid surgery is the surgical improvement of the upper as well as lower eyelids. This surgery can also be performed for medical reasons, i.e. when the faults in the eyelids cause visionary problems. Eyelid wrinkles surgery is mainly done to uplift the wrinkles in and around the eyes.

Before going to the operating table, the patient should consult the surgeons and learn about eyelid and wrinkle surgery facts. The surgeons enquire about their personal health and also examine the vision, the eyelids, the tear film, and the front of the eyes, etc, for understanding the condition of the skin, the retina and also the conditions of both eyebrows and eyelids.

The surgery lasts for about one to three hours or even less if just one of the upper or lower lids is operated on. This operation may sometimes be a day’s case, meaning that the patient can have his operation and return home on the same day. But, sometimes the patient has to stay for more than one night for observation.

Once the patient is released from hospital, he or she is expected to follow the surgeon’s advice on taking care of the plastic surgery eyelid reduction operated eyes. One should regularly apply ice-bags on the eyelid surgery incision for the first forty-eight hours. The patient should always try to keep his or her head higher than the rest of the body. The patient may also be advised against wearing makeup and contact lenses for the few days following the surgery.  The patient is expected to avoid giving too much strain his or her eyes for at least one-two weeks and wear dark sunglasses for avoiding wind and sun.
