How Lasik Eye Surgery works

Lasik eye surgery is more beneficial than any other eye surgery. During and after the lasik eye surgery procedure the patient does not feel any pain and the vision improves gradually. Lasik eye surgery procedure is mainly done on the cornea to reshape it so that the correct image is formed on the retina. In order to reshape the cornea an ophthalmologist uses a small blade and or a laser beam in the lasik eye surgery. The different problems of the eye nearsightedness and farsightedness are mostly attributable to the defective shape of the cornea. The lasik procedure reshapes the cornea to eliminate these problems. Before the lasik surgery procedures the eyes of the patient are to be checked by a qualified ophthalmologist to ensure the health of the eyes and whether the eye can sustain the results of lasik eye surgery procedure. This is done by a complete checkup of the eye. Some even go to the extent of wavefront analysis of the eyes so that a correct mapping of the eye is done for the image formation on the retina.

Now let us come to how lasik eye surgery works. In this lasik procedure laser rays are used to cut out a thin circular flap on the cornea and remove it partially. This thin circular flap is created with the help of an instrument known as microkeratome. After moving the flap a thin ultra violet ray is used to cut away the tissues of the cornea which are creating the problems of near and farsightedness. The nearsighted problem is corrected by flattening the cornea with this laser eye surgery. The farsightedness problem is due to a thinner cornea. The lasik eye surgery procedure reshapes the cornea to make it much steeper to eliminate this problem.

Another problem of astigmatism is due to irregular shape of the cornea. Lasik enhancement procedure takes care of this problem by smoothening of the cornea. During the lasik eye surgery procedure the laser used is controlled by the ophthalmologist with the software available for laser eye surgery procedure. After the cornea is reshaped to the satisfaction of the ophthalmologist the flap is again put back to its original position.

Like any surgery lasik eye surgery is also associated with some risks. These are over correctness, dry eyes, double vision, nights glaring etc. But these side effects are either short term which gets automatically get cured with proper rest or can be treated with medication or corrective thin lenses or contact lenses. If the problem still persists then the doctor prescribes for lasik enhancement procedure which takes care of these problems. To avoid these problems lasik surgery procedures should be carried out by efficient and experienced ophthalmologist with proper software and equipments. The surgery is painless and after a little amount of rest the patient can walk out from the clinic though for going home he should be driven by some body else. If the other eye is also being operated the doctor usually give a little rest between the two procedures.

Summary
The above is the procedure of how lasik eye surgery works to correct the shape of the cornea by either flattening it or making the angle steep so that the light is correctly focused through the lens and the image is formed on the retina thus eliminating the vision problems.
