Microdermabrasion Safety

Microdermabrasion is a process of exfoliating the superficial skin by sand blasting the skin with aluminum dioxide, baking powder or salt. This brings out the inner layer of the skin with less irregularities and scar marks. Microdermabrasion is also used for treating acne problems. Though this microdermabrasion treatment does not cure the acne problem it only removes the effect of the acne. Microdermabrasion is also a cosmetic procedure. As with any cosmetic procedure microdermabrasion also has related microdermabrasion risk and complications. Let’s first come to the complications of microdermabrasion. Complications of microdermabrasion are very rare as it is not a surgical process. As it is not a surgical process it does not require any type of anesthesia thus, eliminating the complexities associated with anesthesia. Immediately after microdermabrasion the inner skin is exposed to the environment. The inner skin is very delicate and prone to harmful effects of the environment. Sometimes immediately after the microdermabrasion session the skin becomes reddish in color and it can also becomes itchy. But these complications of microdermabrasion are just temporary in nature and usually go off within a few hours. After microdermabrasion the skin becomes very dry and feel like wind burn or sun burn. To combat these complications of microdermabrasion moisturizing lotions are used to re-hydrate the skin. Sun screen lotions are used to avoid the harmful sun rays which can burn the inner delicate skin if the patient goes out to the sun immediately after the microdermabrasion process. But as you see all these complications of microdermabrasion are temporary in nature and can mostly be avoided. With proper precautions microdermabrasion risk can be avoided and you can get microdermabrasion really safe skin. Some other rarely occurring microdermabrasion risk is getting of the abrasive material into the eyes of the patient. This can raise a complication of microdermabrasion as a vision problem. But after the year 2001, cosmetic surgeons all over have started to use goggles as a microdermabrasion safety precaution so that getting of the abrasive material into the eyes of the patient can be avoided. Another minor microdermabrasion risk is the inhalation of the abrasive material. This is as good as dust going inside the nasal system. This type of complications can even happen while one is moving on the roads with heavy traffic and inhaling normal dust particles. Still as a safety of microdermabrasion dual system hand held devices are used for microdermabrasion process. In this the vacuuming and blowing of the abrasive materials are done simultaneously. This reduces the microdermabrasion risk of inhaling the abrasive powder. As this process removes the top layer of the skin hence, mishandling of the hand held device may cause complications of microdermabrasion by injuring the inner delicate skin. If the tool is not properly sterilized then also comes the microdermabrasion risk of infection or hyper-pigmentation. But these types of complications are very rarely found as the cosmetic surgeons employed in this field are trained in a highly professional manner.

Summary
Complications of microdermabrasion compared to other cosmetic surgery are very less. Even these complications of microdermabrasion can be eliminated with proper microdermabrasion safety precautions. So before choosing a doctor or a home microdermabrasion kit discuss at length with your dermatologist for microdermabrasion and complications (risks).
