Before and After Rhinoplasty (Nose) Surgery
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure used to reshape the nose. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, alter the shape of the nose tip or the nose bridge, shorten the nose, taper the width of the nostrils and modify the angle formed by your nose and the upper lip. Rhinoplasty, generally known as nose job, also rectifies a birth imperfection and is also used in alleviating certain breathing problems. The surgery takes approximately two hours but the operative time may be higher if the surgery involves complex procedures.
You must follow the guidelines laid by your before rhinoplasty surgery. Before rhinoplasty, a complete medical history of the patient is studied to examine the total health of the patient. The doctor then explains to the patient the type of anesthesia used, the rhinoplasty process. He also explains the extent of expectations as well as the basic risks and problems that can arise after rhinoplasty. The photographs are taken before rhinoplasty procedure and after rhinoplasty surgery to evaluate the degree of enhancement. If you are a smoker, you must stop smoking for at least a month before the surgery. This is due to the fact that smoking obstructs the healing after rhinoplasty process.
Other instructions to be followed before rhinoplasty include the exclusion of a few drugs that contain aspirin; this is done so as to diminish the likelihood of surplus bleeding. If you are taking any other medication over the prescribed medications or vitamins or any other herbal supplements, you must inform your doctor before rhinoplasty as these medications might cause problems with anesthesia.
The rhinoplasty surgery commences by revealing the fundamental skeleton of bone and cartilage by sorting out structures from the overlying skin. The incision is done either inside the nose, which is a closed rhinoplasty technique, or partially outside the nose, which is an open rhinoplasty technique. The cartilage and bone can then be carved into the required shape. The nasal hump is removed using a mold or a scrape and after that the nasal bones can be together to form a narrower nose bridge. The cartilage of nose can be spruced to shape up the tip of the nose.
After rhinoplasty, the degree of pain is moderate to severe and requires about 2-12 days of pain medication. The swelling and bruising after rhinoplasty remain for 2-7 weeks for closed rhinoplasty surgery and 2- 7 months for open rhinoplasty technique. The numbness is felt at the tip of nose after rhinoplasty and the healing takes about a month. After rhinoplasty, the bandages must be changed in 5 – 10 days. You can go for exercises like swimming after about 2 months .The final result after rhinoplasty comes up after 3-4 months and use of sunblock is must for initial few months.
When the nose tip is operated, the tip swelling remains for at least 2 months after rhinoplasty. At times, a complication of hyper-pigmentation is seen after rhinoplasty, a strict follow-up schedule with doctor is a must to do away with the problem. After rhinoplasty the nose may look uneven, bent, swollen, bruised, numb and painful. The nose appears to be big and over-projected on the face giving it an ugly appearance initially, thus after rhinoplasty the patient specially the teenagers should be taught not to feel depressed.
Summary: Rhinoplasty rectifies nose imperfection and give it a good shape. Instructions laid by surgeon must be followed before and after rhinoplasty to avoid complications and inappropriate results.
