Rhinoplasty (Nose) Surgery Risks and Complication
Rhinoplasty is performed to rectify the nasal imperfections including a nasal hump , a deviated septum, wide nostrils and can improve the looks by narrowing the tip or shortening the nose. Rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure and is performed under a local anesthesia.
There are various risks and complications involved with this surgery . The most common risk associated with rhinoplasty is the resultant abnormal shape of nose. The nose may have a haggard tip, dug out nose, beak shaped nose or a pug nose. Nasal tip boss is another complication of rhinoplasty in which an asymmetrical lump like swelling of cartilage is formed at the nose tip that creates an obvious unevenness. These problems might lead to complications in the look and have to be revised by a secondary surgery where generally implants are used. Another rhinoplasty complication involved is of airway obstruction.
There is a post-operative risk of nasal bleeding in rhinoplasty. A severe headache or repeated nausea due to anesthesia reaction is a risk linked with any surgery. The blood vessels of the nose are quit thin and may burst leading to heavy bleeding in closed rhinoplasty. In case the results of rhinoplasty are problematic and not up-to-the-mark, there is a high risk of severe depression in the patient. Another open rhinoplasty complication is discoloration of septum. Certain cases of rhinoplasty require the use of implants and there is again a risk of extrusion of these implant. Although rarely found, there is a risk of infection in nasal surgery.
If the infection increases it might lead to complications of pain, swelling, redness etc. Adhesions might lead to scars or a bigger complication of Keloid where a heavy scar is found. Some other complications arise if rhinoplasty is not appropriately performed. These are loss of smell or a loss of structural support. If the surgery causes damage to nerve may be due to perforation of septum or a deep incision, the rhinoplasty patient might experience complications of numbness and pain. These may be temporary but if the extent of damage is irreversible, the loss of sensation might become permanent. A risk of septum hematoma is linked with open rhinoplasty.
The rhinoplasty patient might react to the postoperative medication. There is a risk of developing sinusitis due to shrinkage of the nasal lining. Rhinoplasty might lead to complicated side effects of skin irregularities or skin necrosis, however the risk is higher in smokers. In most cases the swelling subsides, however if the case is complicated involving other health problems of the patients, the healing might be very slow and the swelling might not subside.
Smoking decreases the blood circulation and vascularity to a great extent. This implies the problem in oxygen supply to tissues, thus increasing the risk for slow healing and other complications. Another complication of rhinoplasty is Toxic Shock Syndrome that causes nausea, fever and rashes. The risk rate of this syndrome is as low as 0.016% of all rhinoplasty surgeries. The complication rate for rhinoplasty ranges from 5-20%, though the life intimidating complication rate is 2- 5%
Summary: There are various risks and complications linked with rhinoplasty. The common risks are abnormal shape of nose, swelling, airway obstruction, infection, nasal bleeding, anesthesia reaction, burst in blood vessels, depression, discoloration etc
