Rhinoplasty Nose Surgery
Rhinoplasty is the most common plastic surgery procedure to reshape the nose. Rhinoplasty can decrease or increase the size of your nose, alter the shape of the nose tip or the nose bridge, shorten the nose, taper the width of the nostrils and modify the angle formed by your nose and the upper lip. Rhinoplasty, generally known as nose job, also rectifies a birth imperfection and is also used in alleviating certain breathing problems.
All surgeons have their own exclusive methods of performing a Rhinoplasty but there are some steps common to most of methods. The surgery begins by revealing the fundamental skeleton of bone and cartilage by sorting out structures from the overlying skin. The incision is done either inside the nose, which is a closed rhinoplasty technique, or partially outside the nose, which is an open rhinoplasty technique. The cartilage and bone can then be carved into the required shape. The nasal hump is removed using a mold or a scrape and after that the nasal bones can be together to form a narrower nose bridge. The cartilage of nose can be spruced to shape up the tip of the nose.
In case the rhinoplasty is done to reduce the width of nostrils, small lodge of skin is removed from the base of nostrils and they can be brought closer. The narrow piece of cartilage that divides the two parts of the nose is called the septum. At times it is bent by birth and causes breathing problems. The surgery to straighten it or shorten it in case it is too long or to remove the deviated portion of the sputum is known as deviated septum rhinoplasty. The septum is also trimmed to change the angle between the nose and upper lip. In these rhinoplasty procedures, a support made of tape and a cover of plastic, metal, or plaster is useful for the bone and cartilage of the nose to keep up the new shape. Certain Rhinoplasty procedure involves solving the problems of a flat nose; here the profile may be augmented with splice of bone or cartilage.
Rhinoplasty generally takes about two hours, the duration might exceed if the surgery is complicated. Many plastic surgeons do rhinoplasty from within the nose; the closed rhinoplasty making the incision inside the nostrils while the open rhinoplasty is performed in more complicated cases where a small incision across the columella, which is a vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils, is made.
When the anesthesia goes off after the surgery, you can go back home under care. Avoid the intake of solids and you should not smoke or consume alcohol. Refrain from chewing and take the prescribed medication. Inflammation and bruising occur and they worsen for the initial three days. Rhinoplasty patient need at least two weeks to recover completely. The usual complications linked with rhinoplasty surgery are cosmetic ones as some of the rhinoplasty patients are not satisfied with the consequences of surgery and call for a revision rhinoplasty surgery, though the surgeon might not be at fault always. Other complications of infection and blood clotting are found in medical literature but are rare.
Summary: Rhinoplasty is used to decrease or increase the size of your nose, alter the shape of the nose tip or the nose bridge, shorten the nose, taper the width of the nostrils and modify the angle formed by your nose and the upper lip.
