Liposuction and Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck other wise known as Abdominoplasty is a process of removing excess body fats from the abdomen and stretching the skin over the abdomen to give one a flat tummy appearance.  Liposuction is the process of dissolving the excess body fat in the pockets that have been identified, and this is drained surgically.  A tummy tuck involves making a long surgical incision across the abdomen, stretching the skin, re-positioning the navel and then suturing the incision.  During this process excess fat that is lying in front is surgically removed along with the excess skin. 

When carrying out a liposuction, fat layer that is beyond the open incision is accessed by the means of a cannula.  A cannula is nothing but an open tube that is slowly put in the region of the accumulated fat, then this tube is used to pump in a fluid that dissolves the fat and at the same time the cannula is moved around to dislocate the fat and after a waiting period of an hour or so, the fat is drained through the same tube.  This is the basic procedure of liposuction.  There are modern methods which make use of ultrasonic to dislocate the fat from the outside and then drain the fat through the cannula.  The fluid that is used to dilute the fat is almost three times in volume to the fat that needs to be dissolved. 

When one is getting an Abdominoplasty done then one should go in for liposuction as well, this will help the surgeon to contour the body perfectly in a more appropriate way than only with Abdominoplasty.  Liposuction and mini Abdominoplasty goes well hand in hand as this mini Abdominoplasty is localized and liposuction can access areas not covered by mini Abdominoplasty.  This includes the regions of the thighs, upper abdomen and the calf region.  Both mini Abdominoplasty and liposuction require only local anesthesia and a general sedative. 

More often than not people enquire that if liposuction is being done along with an Abdominoplasty, or if liposuction is a part of the Abdominoplasty procedure.  There is nothing to say that we have a liposuction versus and Abdominoplasty procedure.  Abdominoplasty is a separate issue and needs to be treated separately, but one can go in for both the procedures at one go.  It would be advisable to have a chat with your doctor and decide what you require to contour your body to the desired shape and what these procedures would cost.   Based on this information you could proceed further to decide whether you need a Abdominoplasty and liposuction thrown in together or would only a Abdominoplasty do or only a liposuction will be sufficient. 

Both the procedures liposuction and Abdominoplasty are covered under plastic surgery and they are done by a plastic surgeon.  Recovery from Abdominoplasty also known as tummy tuck can take up almost the same amount of time as recovery from both the procedures i.e. tummy tuck and liposuction done together.  If one is not going to face any complications from any one procedure then the chances of one facing complications from the other procedure is also rare.
